A better website starts with a clearer brief.
You do not need a finished specification to start a conversation. A few concrete details can give the project a useful direction.
Start with the people who will use the website. Describe what they need to find and what you would like them to do next: enquire, compare a service, explore your work or understand an organisation.
Gather the content you already have. A current logo, service descriptions, product information and a few photographs help reveal what is ready and what needs attention. It is useful to distinguish approved material from working drafts.
Choose references for a reason. Instead of asking for a copy of another website, note the qualities you value: its pacing, clarity, typography, photography or way of explaining a complex service. Those observations help us create something that belongs to your brand.
Finally, identify who will maintain the site. If your team will publish news or update services, include that in the brief. The editing experience deserves the same attention as the public pages.
